Strategic Account Manager, Waterworks and Water Utility Products
Own the largest water utility, municipal, and contractor relationships across New England for a growing waterworks distributor, with a preset book of top tier accounts and a broader product portfolio to sell into them.
The Opportunity
Our client, a New England waterworks distributor backed by a national water products parent company, is hiring a Strategic Account Manager based in Massachusetts to own its most important customer relationships. The company supplies pipe, valves, fittings, hydrants, water meters, and related services to water utilities, municipalities, and the contractors who build and maintain water infrastructure.
The territory covers all six New England states, with most accounts within three to four hours of a central Massachusetts base. You start with a preset book of top tier and high potential accounts. The growth target is expansion: helping existing customers buy more of a portfolio that has grown significantly, and turning low spend, high potential accounts into top tier ones.
This is an overlay role. Field account managers handle day-to-day orders, and you own the strategic relationship and the growth plan with directors, senior managers, and executives. It is consultative, relationship driven industrial sales where account strategy matters more than call volume.
Why This Role
$200K Year 1 OTE at Target
A $125,000 base plus a $75,000 annual commission target tied to revenue growth. The typical earning range at goal attainment runs $175,000 to $250,000, with more available to top performers.
Start With the Top Accounts
You are not cold hunting. You inherit a preset book of the largest and highest potential accounts in New England and grow them with a broader portfolio.
More to Sell Into Every Account
The product and service lineup has expanded well beyond what many customers buy today. Your job is to find and close that gap with each account.
Field Team Handles the Daily Orders
Field account managers cover day-to-day tactical sales. That frees you to spend your time on strategy, executive relationships, and growth plans.
Build the Book Your Way
You report to a Vice President and run your own territory plan without micromanagement. Commission goals are reviewed every six months, so strong results are recognized quickly.
Home Most Nights
Daily field travel across New England, home most nights. Overnights are limited to a few trade shows and one or two trips a year to the parent company in Texas.
What You Will Do
- Own the strategic relationship with a preset book of top tier and high potential water utility, municipal, and contractor accounts across New England
- Build and run a growth plan for each account, identifying the products and services customers could be buying and are not
- Meet in person with directors, senior managers, and executives, running quality strategic meetings most days of the week
- Partner with field account managers who handle day-to-day orders so every account gets both strategic and tactical coverage
- Present, negotiate, and close expanded business across pipe, valves, fittings, hydrants, water meters, and related services
- Keep account plans, activity, and opportunities current in HubSpot
- Represent the company at regional and national trade shows and visit the Texas headquarters one or two times a year
Who We Are Looking For
The strongest candidates are already the strategic seller who sits above the branch and field reps and owns the biggest customer relationships.
- 8 to 10 or more years of B2B sales experience, with flexibility for an exceptional seller
- Strategic or key account experience selling to senior manager, director, and executive level decision makers
- A track record of growing large accounts by expanding the products and services they buy
- Strong presentation, negotiation, and communication skills
- Bachelor's degree
- Based in New England, and comfortable with daily field travel across all six states
- Strategic, key account, or solutions sales experience with a waterworks distributor
- Existing relationships with New England municipalities, water utilities, and large contractors
- Waterworks product knowledge: pipe, valves, fittings, hydrants, and water meters
- Based in Massachusetts
- HubSpot experience
- Strategic, solutions, market, or sales manager roles at national or regional waterworks distributors
- Sales roles with water meter manufacturers, for sellers open to the distribution side
- Strategic account sellers from adjacent industries who sell to the same municipal, utility, and contractor buyers
If you are an exceptional strategic seller to municipal, utility, or contractor buyers but have limited waterworks experience, apply anyway. Account strategy and executive relationships transfer.
Compensation and Benefits
- Structure: Base salary plus commission on a goal attainment model measured on revenue growth. Goals are set and reviewed every six months, and commission is paid monthly or quarterly
- Vehicle: Company vehicle, or a competitive car allowance with a fuel card
- Benefits: Medical insurance and a 401(k) with company match
- Relocation: Considered for the right candidate
Location and Schedule
This is a remote, field based role covering Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. A central Massachusetts home base is preferred because most accounts are within three to four hours of it; an exceptional candidate elsewhere in New England will be considered.
Expect daily field travel and home most nights. Overnights are occasional: a few trade shows a year, most of them in New England, one or two national shows, and one or two trips a year to the Texas headquarters.
Face-to-face strategic meetings with utility, municipal, and contractor leaders across New England.
Account plans, follow-up, coordination with field account managers, and HubSpot updates.
Regional and national trade shows plus one or two visits to the Texas headquarters.
